Rust monuments and keycard puzzles
Keycards chain upward. You take a green card to a tier 1 puzzle to earn a blue card, then a blue card to a tier 2 puzzle to earn a red card. Red cards open the top monuments: Launch Site, Military Tunnels, both Oil Rigs and Underwater Labs.
How does the keycard progression work?[1]
Green cards are found in low-tier loot. Running a green puzzle rewards a blue card, and running a blue puzzle rewards a red card. Red cards do not spawn in loot directly, so every red card in the game came from someone completing a blue puzzle first.
You also need a fuse for most puzzle rooms. Arriving at a monument with the right card and no fuse is the classic wasted trip, so carry both.
Red cards carry limited uses, which is why players run blue puzzles repeatedly rather than hoarding a single card for the whole wipe.
Which monuments need which keycard?[1]
Low-tier monuments need a green card, mid-tier need blue, and the high-value ones need red. Military Tunnels is the exception that wants all three in sequence, which is part of why it is one of the most contested places on any map.
- Green card monuments
- Entry-level puzzles. Cheap to run, low risk, and the source of your blue cards.
- Blue card monuments
- Mid-tier loot and components. The step you repeat to keep red cards in supply.
- Red card monuments
- Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Oil Rig, Large Oil Rig, Underwater Labs and Missile Silo. Elite crates and tier 3 gear.
Is Launch Site worth the risk?
Launch Site holds the densest tier 3 loot in the game, but it is guarded by nine scientists, carries the highest radiation on the map, and can spawn the Bradley tank. It rewards a prepared group and punishes a solo player who arrives underequipped.
The radiation requirement alone rules it out early. Going without adequate protection means burning through supplies faster than the loot replaces them.
For a solo player, repeated blue puzzle runs usually return more per hour than one risky Launch Site attempt, because a failed run at Launch Site costs you everything you carried in.
How do monuments change on a modded server?
The puzzles and layouts stay the same, but boosted loot tables and faster respawns change how often running them is worth it. On high-rate servers, monument running competes with node farming rather than replacing it, since gather scales but monument timers usually do not.
This flips the usual vanilla advice. In vanilla, monuments are the efficient route to components you cannot farm. At 10x and above, farming often outpaces them, and monuments become a source of specific blueprints and fights rather than a general income.
Check what your server actually boosts before planning a route. A server with boosted loot but vanilla respawn timers rewards a completely different circuit from one that boosts both.
